Several crimes carried the death penalty: treason, murder, witchcraft, arson, sodomy, rape, bestiality, adultery, and cursing or smiting one’s parents. It levied taxes, decreed the distribution of land and set out punishments for specific crimes. The legal code included a rudimentary bill of rights and guaranteed trial by jury.
